Many Eritrean migrants attempt to make the journey to Israel in search of work and a better life. But those who try to cross the border illegally from Egypt often fall victim to human traffickers. They are sold on to Bedouin people smugglers who lock them up with the aim of getting ransoms. The smugglers use weapons of torture and rape against their captives. Relatives are called during torture sessions in order to pressure them into paying huge ransoms.
After months in captivity, migrants whose families have paid up are released in the desert land of Sinai near the Egyptian-Israeli border. There, they are likely to get caught by Egyptian border patrol forces and imprisoned in overcrowded cells.
